Yoga book/video review

Books:

The following are some of the books I recommend for Yoga practice and study. I actually own and/or have read all of the books below.

The Art and Science of Pranayama - By Dr. H.R. Nagendra

Synopsis:

Presented in this booklet are those principles that throw more light on the concept of Prana as described in the Upanishads and texts on Yoga. The techniques of Pranayama described here are in no way exhaustive, but certainly give insights into the secrets of gaining control over Prana by harnessing one's breath.

What I say:

This is a very good book to know about the scientific aspect of Pranayama. Lots of scientific illustrations and some medical aspects are also covered. Also detailed explanation about how to perform different types of pranayama. This book is from Vivekananda Kendra Yoga Research Foundation.

What I say:

I found this book has some wonderful color photos, illustrations and easy to follow. It covers asanas, meditation, kriyas, basic breathing exercises, food and over all yoga lifestyle. Raja Yoga - By Vivekananda
Synopsis:

Each soul is potentially devine. The goal is to manifest this divinity within by controlling nature: external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic control, or philosophy - by one, or more, or all of these - and be free. This is the whole of religion. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details.

What I say:

This  is another excellent book, to drench yourself into Raja Yoga. Real Yogi explains real yoga. I liked many of the Vivekananda works and among them Raja Yoga is the  best. But it is bit difficult to understand and is only for serious readers. I highly recommend this book for serious people who have interest in spirituality, hinduism and science.

Power Yoga: The Total Strength and Flexibility Workout - By Beryl Bender Birch
Beyond Power Yoga: 8 Levels of practice for Body and Soul - By Beryl Bender Birch
Synopsis:

Power Yoga is a unique combination of dynamic breathing, which creates a high heat, high energy workout. Power Yoga is a choreographed sequence of postures that flow into one another, building strength, unwinding tight joints and loosening the muscles. Based on the classical yoga system called astanga, power yoga is a complete mind and body workout that develops concentration and reduces the stress.

What I say:

This is another best book to add for collection. I liked her second book Beyond Power Yoga.  It is quite personal, inspiring, educational and humorous. She writes her own experiences that's what makes reading enjoyable and interesting. As myself a yoga practitioner from the last ten years, I have the same feelings in many ways. Good book for beginner, intermediate, or for serious practitioner.
